PRESIDENT ILHAM ALIYEV ATTENDS “DAY OF AZERBAIJAN” IN BEIJING

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva have attended the “Day of Azerbaijan” within the framework of the 29th Summer Olympic Games at the China World Hotel in Beijing. Leaders of the international sport federations warmly welcomed President Ilham Aliyev. “It is the fourth time that Azerbaijan has participated in the Olympic Games. To date, we have been success as our medal count at every Olympics rose as compared with every previous one. I hope we will continue this tradition, “said the President at a ceremony. The Head of State noted government of Azerbaijan plays an important role in developing sports in Azerbaijan as many Olympic complexes had been opened so far. Azerbaijani Leader said it is important that International Olympic Committee, European Olympic Committee presidents and Olympic movement top officials attended the opening ceremonies of the Olympic complexes. “Sport, friendship, partnership, contacts – all these things are the important factors helping to strengthen peace and security in the world, and in this regard, Azerbaijan plays the important role. Azerbaijan is a young, independent state, but it has great culture, history and traditions as well as sport traditions,” added the President. In conclusion, President Ilham Aliyev wished every success to all athletes and happiness to all countries and their peoples.

AZERBAIJANI FLAG RAISED IN BEIJING`S OLYMPIC VILLAGE

A flag-raising ceremony of the Azerbaijan Olympic delegation took place Thursday in Beijing`s Olympic village. The event was opened by the village`s Mayor Chen Zhili. The ceremony brought together members of the Azerbaijani delegation including Youth and Sports Minister Azad Rahimov, Vice-President of the National Olympic Committee Chingiz Huseynzade, Azerbaijani Ambassador to China Yashar Aliyev and other officials.

56 AZERBAIJANI ATHLETES TO PARADE INTO BEIJING’S NATIONAL STADIUM

56 Azerbaijani athletes will parade into Beijing’s National Stadium to kick-off the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Olympic champion, wrestler Farid Mansurov will bear the Azerbaijani flag.
