AZERBAIJAN SECTION OF BAKU-TBILISI-CEYHAN MAIN OIL EXPORT PIPELINE OPENS
A solemn ceremony to mark the opening of the Azerbaijan section of the Heydar Aliyev Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Main Export Pipeline and its first line fill has taken place in Sangachal oil terminal near Baku, May 25, 2005. Realization of this world's largest energy project started in September 1994 with signing of "The Contract of the Century" has become a triumph of the new oil strategy initiated and developed by national leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev.
Present at the Heydar Aliyev BTC pipeline's opening ceremony were Presidents Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, Ahmet Necdet Sezer of Turkey, Mikhail Saakashvili of Georgia, Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan, as well as US Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman, BP's group chief executive, Lord John Browne and other high-ranking officials from France, Ukraine, Japan, Norway and other countries.
Some 10 mln barrels of crude oil is needed to fill the 1770 km long pipeline running from Sangachal terminal through Georgia to the Mediterranean port of Ceyhan in Turkey with 'black gold'. This oil will be extracted from the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli field in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea. Filling with oil the whole pipeline will take over six months with loading the first tanker in Ceyhan in the 4th quarter of 2005.
