Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of AzerbaijanBeing interested in progressive continuation of the peace process over the settlement of the conflict between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan and with a view to prevent the actions carried out by Armenia in the occupied territories, which make a negative impact on negotiations and contradict to the Geneva Conventions, the Republic of Azerbaijan initiated the inclusion of an item in the agenda of the 59th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UN GA) entitled "The situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan".The matter of inclusion of an additional item in the current agenda of the UN GA entitled "The situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan" was considered at the meeting of the UN General Committee on 27 October 2004. As a result of the debates, the Committee recommended to include the aforementioned item in the UN GA current agenda.Following the General Committee's recommendation, this issue was discussed at the meeting of the UN GA on 29 October 2004. In the course of discussions, Armenia demanded to put the issue to the vote. 143 countries have participated at the voting. 43 countries voted in favour to 1 against (Armenia) with 99 abstentions. Therefore, the decision to include the item "The situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan" in the agenda of the 59th session of the UN GA was taken.This decision has laid the basis for further effective and just consideration of the issue for the purpose to prevent the illegal actions committed by Armenia in the occupied territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan.October 30, 2004 |
